Doctors, surgeons, and other healthcare providers work tirelessly to save lives. To honor their commitment and hard work, Doctors’ Day was established in 1933. Every year since, on March 30, we celebrate physicians and all the important medical advances that benefit us. There are many ways in which you can observe Doctors’ Day 2023, from sending a personalized gift to your doctor to binge-watching Grey’s Anatomy!

A Brief History of Doctors’ Day

Doctors’ Day was the idea of Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond from Georgia. Eudora believed that doctors deserved more recognition for their tireless work and dedication. March 30 was chosen for the holiday, as it’s the anniversary of the first use of anesthesia during surgery, by Dr. Crawford Long.

Eudora sent greeting cards to local doctors, placed red carnations on the graves of deceased physicians, and even organized a celebratory lunch to give doctors public recognition.

How You Can Celebrate Doctors’ Day

Today, patients and former patients typically send thank you cards, flowers, and personalized gifts to their doctors. The goal is to show appreciation for the care they’ve received or for their lives being saved.

If you or a family member have been treated by an amazing doctor or surgeon, why not send a token of your gratitude? This could be a heartfelt note or a handmade card. It could be a symbolic bouquet of red carnations. It could be a unique gift, such as a personalized doctor’s office sign, that becomes a treasured keepsake.
